Three Microsoft end-of-support dates land in October

Windows 11 version 24H2, Office 2021 and the Windows Server 2012 security updates program all finish on 13 October 2026. Here is how we work through it with clients.

The current landscape

October is consistently busy in the Microsoft lifecycle calendar, and this year three deadlines fall on the same Tuesday.

  • Windows 11 version 24H2 reaches end of servicing on Home and Pro editions on 13 October 2026.
  • Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 reach end of support on 13 October 2026, with no extension available.
  • Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 finish their Extended Security Updates program on 13 October 2026, three years after the products themselves left support.

Lifecycle tracking is one of the quiet parts of ongoing IT management, and it is the kind of thing that stays comfortable when someone is watching the calendar on your behalf.

What it means for your business

The software keeps working. Word still opens and the server still serves files on the morning of the 14th. What stops is the flow of security updates, so every vulnerability found from that point forward stays open on those machines permanently.

Keeping software supported sits at the very first tier of SMB1001, the Australian cyber security standard built for businesses under 200 staff, alongside firewalls, antivirus and automatic updates. It is foundational work, and it increasingly shows up in supplier questionnaires when larger organisations are deciding who to work with.

How we approach it

Every lifecycle conversation we have with a business follows the same three steps, and none of them need to be difficult.

We start with a clear picture. A short review across the fleet tells you which machines are on which version of Windows and Office, which editions they are running, and which ones are approaching a date. Most businesses have never had that list, and it turns a vague worry into a page you can act on.

We map each machine to a path. Some move across with a standard update in the background. Some are older machines that are due for replacement anyway, which makes this a sensible time for a hardware conversation. The server usually needs a short project of its own. Knowing which is which is most of the work.

We sequence it to suit the business. Windows 11 machines take a background update, so they move first. The server and any Office 2021 installs follow as short projects of their own, and any hardware refresh can be spread across the following quarters. That keeps disruption to a few machines at a time and keeps the spend predictable.

Where each one goes next

  • Windows 11. Version 25H2 is supported on Home and Pro until October 2027, and on machines already running 24H2 it installs through Windows Update with a restart at the end.
  • Office. Microsoft 365 Apps stays continuously updated and removes the end-of-support cycle from your calendar for good. Office Home & Business 2024 remains available for businesses that prefer to own their licences outright. Moving to a managed Microsoft 365 tenancy also opens up the security controls we set up as standard, including MFA enforcement, Conditional Access and geographic restrictions.
  • Windows Server. Line-of-business applications often have a supported hosted version already. Shared drives move comfortably to a cloud file service. Anything that needs to stay on a server moves to a current version of Windows Server or into Azure, where the support cycle resets.

Planning the spend

A device or server refresh sits comfortably in end-of-financial-year planning when it is raised now. Spreading the work across two or three quarters lets you match the timing to when the business can carry it.

This is the part our Care Plans are built for. Essential Care, Pro Care and Premium Care all include ongoing IT management with no lock-in contract, so the lifecycle work becomes a scheduled part of the year. The solutions we recommend are designed to be scalable and to grow as the business changes, which is what keeps the next round of dates from arriving as a surprise.
